Grandmothers Campaign
Beds Without Breakfast

Beds WithOut Breakfast (BWOB) is a programme run by and for members of the Grandmothers Campaign in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. It is intended for members of registered “grandmother” groups, regular SLF volunteers, and, in some cases, their friends and family. It is not open to members of the general public. Information on the Foundation can be found at www.stephenlewisfoundation.org

What is BWOB?

Hosts in locations across Canada offer the use of a room to travelling “grannies” for 1-3 nights in return for a donation to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

How does it work?

Interested hosts can contact us for details on getting registered on the site. Would-be guests can find registered homes using the map and contact either the owner or Beds Without Breakfast who in turn would forward their request to the owner, as some owners prefer not to have their e mail addresses publicized.

Arrangements should be made as far in advance as possible, since host “grannies” are not typically in the bed and breakfast business, so may be away or unavailable for extended periods. Some homes are available for 1 night and others for up to 3. Some homes are suitable for one guest, while in other cases travelling companions can also be accommodated. See the map page for specifics on individual homes being offered. As the programme’s name suggests, it is not intended that breakfast be included.

The recommended payment arrangement is that the guest gives the host a cheque made out to the Stephen Lewis Foundation for an amount equivalent to one-third to one- half of typical accommodation costs in that area. The host would then mail that cheque to the Foundation along with a donor card filled in with the host's information. The host is then eligible for a tax deductible receipt. If you use a different donor card from the one linked here, please be sure to put BWOB in the event line.

What are the benefits?

Apart from the obvious benefit to travelling grannies in getting a room for much less than they would otherwise have to pay, this is a great opportunity to meet and network with members of other groups in different parts of the country. Most importantly, this is another source of funds to support the wonderful work done by the Foundation in helping our African counterparts.
